Babelgum Uses Moving Media’s Encoding Expertise

Wed 30 Apr 2008

Moving Media are working in partnership with Babelgum, a new interactive web TV portal which uses peer-to-peer technology to offer free, on-demand personalised channels including everything from music and fashion to film and documentaries.

Babelgum needed a technical partner capable of understanding the challenges and demands of working with cutting-edge technology to deliver a wide variety of short and long form content while retaining the maximum level of quality possible. Babelgum commissioned Moving Media, for digitisation of content and their expertise in encoding video. Moving Media digitise content licensed by Babelgum from broadcast video tape to digital files, which are then securely delivered to their content management system.

Babelgum’s director, Nick Tacchi explains, "We want our users to enjoy a full screen experience on their PC while optimizing the bit rate so we are really playing on the edge of what you can achieve".

Moving Media developed a three step process for video encoding in order to achieve the best quality video. Working beyond simply encoding media, Moving Media focus on technical details such as cropping, editing for web and normalising audio levels to give the best web viewing experience.

Moving Media’s Director. Simon Factor says, "Working with Babelgum has been a great experience for the team at Moving Media, they are pushing the boundaries of what can be done with online video in terms of both quality and viewer experience. One of the challenges of working with Babelgum was designing a media encoding workflow that would deliver the highest quality digital video with an optimized bit rate. We developed a three step process that would allow us to digitise, edit and encode media for both archive and access versions. Preparing for their launch was a busy time for us - as Babelgum ramped up their business, the content pipeline increased exponentially, we increased our capacity in line with this demand encoding thousands of programme items through our digitisation facilities in Los Angeles and Dublin to meet the deadline. Our partnership with Babelgum is great, the team there are great to work with and always ready to try out new things with us as they strive for quality of experience for their viewers – this drives both their content strategy and our shared technical strategy."

As a partner organisation, Moving Media were able to offer a range of audit, technical assessment and project management services to help Babelgum refine their business processes to get the best out of both digitised content and the raw material received initially. Nick Tacchi of Babelgum reveals, "They’ve been working with us pretty much from the beginning. They really wanted to get involved in understanding our business and exactly what we were doing with the video material they were providing to us, how we were actually transforming it and serving to our users"
